The Best LEGO Harry Potter Sets: Ranked

Can't get enough Harry Potter in your life? Here's our list of the Best LEGO Harry Potter sets.
By Ben Jackson   June 8, 2020 10:12 am GMT-0700

Rest easy young wizard. You can officially set your wand down and relax, as you’ve arrived at the definitive list of the best LEGO Harry Potter sets ever made.

It’s been almost 10 years since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II was released in theaters. And yet, the Harry Potter franchise is still a massive industry in itself. You’ve undoubtedly rewatched many of the movies, and probably got your hopes up when Fantastic Beasts came out (slightly disappointing, yes). Maybe you’ve even reread the books to really relive the adventures of Harry, Hermione, and Ron.

There’s something about the original Harry Potter series and the magical world of Hogwarts that just resonated with people. It would be difficult to overstate the cultural significance of Harry Potter. You might have to look at The Lord of The Rings to find a book series that gained as much popularity and widespread appreciation. It’s probably a stretch, but another comparison I’m drawing is Star Wars. The key difference being that unlike Star Wars, the phenomenon that became the Harry Potter franchise was set forth by the novels written by JK Rowling. Harry Potter to this day remains a lucrative asset for Disney, so much so that they gave the franchise a theme park.

Anytime there’s something as big as Harry Potter, you can be sure that the LEGO team is hard at work devising a way to line their pockets. What’s actually insane is how many different LEGO Harry Potter sets that exist. There’s so many different versions of Hogwarts Castle alone, it’s legitimately hard to keep them straight!

And thus, here’s my gift to you, my fellow aspiring wizard of bricks — I spent way too much time putting together my list of the best Harry Potter LEGO sets. Keep in mind that a ton of these sets were released well over 15 years ago, and you’re bound to pay a premium to bring home an original. Here’s my personal top picks for the Top 50 Best LEGO Harry Potter sets.

1. LEGO HARRY POTTER HOGWARTS CASTLE 71043

LEGO 71043 Harry Potter Hogwarts CastleThe most important setting in the entire Harry Potter saga is the unmistakable, epic Hogwarts Castle. It’s where the Sorting Hat placed Harry in Gryffindor, and the scene of so many epic adventures. The team at LEGO fittingly put forward the most impressive LEGO Harry Potter set in this absolutely monstrous replica of the Hogwarts Castle. The 71043 version of the Hogwarts Castle contains a staggering 6,020 pieces. If you were looking for the most epic Wizarding World LEGO of them all, this one surely has no competition. Probably a good sign that it also happened to win Toy of the Year in 2019? The four primary minifigs included are the respective heads of each house – Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin and Hufflepuff. There’s an incredible level of detail with this set, and it’s truly among the most impressive LEGO sets ever produced. To quote the great Will Arnette, it’s time to get your brick on.

2. LEGO HARRY POTTER DIAGON ALLEY 10217

LEGO-10217-Harry-Potter-Diagon-AlleyThe LEGO Diagon Alley set has over 2,000 pieces and is one of the most impressive LEGO Harry Potter sets on the list. Each of the 3 buildings are incredibly detailed. You’ll be recreating Gringott’s Bank, Ollivander’s, and Borgin and Burke’s. But if you’re a serious about LEGO Harry Potter sets, this one belongs in your vault without a doubt. You might just need to break out your own collection of coins to afford it though. LEGO discontinued this set awhile back, but you can still snag it on Amazon if you’re willing to drop $600+. Open your vault and add this one to the collection.

3. LEGO HARRY POTTER ELECTRIC HOGWARTS EXPRESS 10132

LEGO 10132 Harry Potter Hogwarts Express Motorized Train SetFull disclaimer: I’m a sucker for electric train sets, and this one just so happens to combine an electric train with LEGO Harry Potter. Honestly, what could be better? There’s a handful of LEGO Hogwarts Express train sets, but none is more difficult to find than the 10132 set released in 2004. So rare that you can’t even reliably find it on Amazon, and sellers on eBay are routinely looking for $1,000+. If you’re lucky enough to snag one, you’ll realize just how much of a gem this set is. The LEGO 10132 Hogwarts Express train has 706 pieces, but the fact that it’s an electric LEGO Harry Potter train set makes it worthy of your attention. If you don’t feel like taking out a second mortgage, there are certainly other options. But you’re here because you wanted the best of the best, right?

4. LEGO HARRY POTTER HOGWARTS CASTLE 4842

LEGO 4842 Harry Potter Hogwarts CastleDid I mention there’s been a bunch of different Hogwarts Castle sets? Here we have the 4th edition from 2010. While it’s not the biggest, it looks amazing and comes in at nealy 1,300 pieces (1,290 to be exact). All of the minifigs you’d hope to have are in the box, including Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledor, Snape, even the Dark Lord himself, Voldemort. This one is certainly difficult to find, so you’ll need to spend some time on eBay to make sure you can find the 4842 version. Your set wouldn’t be complete without it!

5. LEGO HARRY POTTER CHAMBER OF SECRETS 4730

LEGO 4730 Harry Potter Chamber of SecretsSpeak Parseltongue and face the Heir of Slytherin and his fearsome monster in the Chamber of Secrets! This 591-piece set pits Harry against a 16-year-old Tom Riddle and a petrifying, at best basilisk. Never fear though, as Fawkes, the phoenix, is primed to bring you the Sorting Hat and Godric’s sword. Hurry though, as dear Ginny Weasley rests at the altar, slowly fading into a mere memory. With Ron and Professor Lockhart trapped behind Harry, its up to the second year to save the day!

6. LEGO HARRY POTTER DUMBLEDORE’S OFFICE 4729

LEGO 4729 Harry Potter Dumbledore's OfficeSherbert Lemon! Just like that, the gargoyle leaps away and you walk up the moving and winding staircase to the Hogwarts Headmaster’s office. Join Harry, as he uncovers the truth about his Parseltongue-speaking powers, alongside Professor Dumbledore. This 446-piece LEGO set contains three tiers of magical adventure with plenty of unique features. Cat-morphing, transfiguration Professor Minerva McGonagall is even ready to help you find out the hidden surprises in the office.

7. LEGO HARRY POTTER HOGWARTS CLOCK TOWER 75948

LEGO 75948 Harry Potter Hogwarts Clock TowerI recently bought and put together this Hogwarts Clock Tower LEGO set, and it’s safe to say I fully underestimated it. With 922 pieces, I thought I’d be able to knock it out in about an hour. I was certainly wrong about that. All told, this one was about 4 hours to build. Bigger sets are obviously more fun to put together, and more rewarding when you snap that last brick together. For the amount of bricks you get and the size of the build, there’s few others on this list that can compare in the price range.

8. LEGO HARRY POTTER HOGWARTS GREAT HALL 75954

LEGO 75954 Harry Potter Hogwarts Great HallIf you’re in the market for a decent sized Hogwarts build but don’t want to fork over a mortgage payment, the Hogwarts Great Hall set might be a decent compromise. With 878 pieces, this build is pretty awesome. Not quite as cool as some of the larger Hogwarts Castle builds, but it does come with 10 awesome minifigs including Harry, Ron, Hermione, Hagrid, Draco and more. There’s also the fact that it includes a movable spiral staircase. For Wizards aged 9-14, but speaking on behalf of myself, adults will enjoy it as well.

9. LEGO HARRY POTTER WHOMPING WILLOW 75953

LEGO 75953 Harry Potter Whomping WillowThe Whomping Willow made its appearance in the Chamber of Secrets, and LEGO commemorated the crazy tree with this 753 piece set. The spinning branches do not mess around, hence the Flying Ford Anglia that comes with the set. What I personally find hilarious about this LEGO is the that you can put the flying car in the branches of the tree, and spin it around to hurl the car towards the ground. This set also includes a small section of Hogwarts Castle, which adds a little bit of context and ambience to the build. 6 minifigs are included; 7 if you include the Hedgwig owl figure. Considering the price of some of the other sets, I view the LEGO Whomping Willow set as one of the best values among all the LEGO Harry Potter sets.

10. LEGO HARRY POTTER HOGWARTS CASTLE 5378

LEGO 5378 Harry Potter Hogwarts CastleOkay, this is getting to be a bit ridiculous, is it not? We’re already looking at the fourth Hogwarts Castle LEGO set, and we’re not even done yet. The 5378 version was retired quite a while back, so you’re bound to pay a premium for this version. If you’re like me though, you want as many of these sets as you can possibly justify buying. This version of the Hogwarts Castle contains 943 pieces, and while it isn’t as impressive as some of the others, it’s still pretty solid. Is it worth the price tag though? You’ll have to be the judge of that one.

11. LEGO HARRY POTTER HOGWARTS CASTLE 4709

LEGO 4709 Harry Potter Hogwarts CastleGrab your invisibility cloak, it’s time to find all the hidden rooms and treasures in the castle, especially those forbidden in the third-floor corridor. Return to the great magical halls of Hogwarts Castle and prepare for an education like none other. This 682-piece LEGO set comes equipped with several features, including a trap door, floo-powder ready fireplace, tons of secret chambers, and the first-years boat. With an enormous amount of minifigures, this set truly sets your imagination on high. You could take the golden trio with Scabbers through the Fat Lady portrait into the Gryffindor common room, or maybe run into Draco Malfoy for a little rat-a-tat. Even Professors Dumbledore and Snape are included. No Harry Potter collection is complete without Hogwarts Castle and with such an array of features and characters, this model should be a must have!

12. LEGO HARRY POTTER HOGWARTS CASTLE 4757

LEGO 4757 Harry Potter Hogwarts CastleOh hey, look: another Hogwarts Castle LEGO set! This second edition of the Hogwarts Castle was released in 2004, and this one very much feels like a retro edition in comparison to the monster 6,000 piece set on the list. But while it’s retro-looking, that doesn’t make it any less fun to build. With 928 pieces in the build, it’ll take some time to put together, and isn’t that what you want after all. At this point, why not just buy all of the LEGO Hogwarts Castle sets? Your nerd friends will be impressed.

13. LEGO HARRY POTTER HOGWARTS CASTLE 4867

LEGO 4867 Harry Potter Hogwarts CastlePieretotum Locomotor, i.e. ready yourself to defend Hogwarts Castle! The Death Eaters, led by Lord Voldemort, are inching ever closer to the school, threatening its students. This discontinued 466-piece LEGO set brings the epic battle of Hogwarts to you. The coolest feature by far is the exploding bridge minifigure Neville Longbottom uses to trick the Death Eaters. Set the battle with good guys (Harry, Neville, and Professors Sprout and Lupin) against bad guys (Goyle, Death Eaters, and dementors). With so many posable rooms like the Room of Requirement and the Astronomy Tower, this set will provide endless scenarios to recreate the magical event.

14. LEGO HARRY POTTER DURMSTRANG SHIP 4768

LEGO 4768 Harry Potter Durmstrang ShipWhat’s that bubbling in the Black Lake? A merman, a giant squid, no! It’s the massive Durmstrang ship, carrying a vendetta to one-up Hogwarts! It takes 566 pieces to build the mysterious ship, brining students taught the Dark Arts, rather than the defense of them. The ship carries with it minifigures of Harry’s competitor and Ron’s half-idol, half-ire Viktor Krum and the would-be reformed Death Eater, Professor Karkaroff. Prepare to engage in magical cooperation, or maybe just competition, as this Dark Art using set of students arrives!

15. LEGO HARRY POTTER HOGWARTS EXPRESS TRAIN CAR 4841

LEGO 4841 Harry Potter Hogwarts Express TrainClimb aboard the Hogwarts Express and journey back to the magical world of Quidditch, midnight duels, and pumpkin juice! This 4841 version of the iconic train comes with 5 minifigures (Harry, Ron, Ginny, Luna, and Draco), several accessories, and a removable passenger car roof. Did I mention the food trolley and invisible cloak are included? Sign me up for a chocolate frog! With 646 pieces and a price just under $200, this LEGO set is a must have for any Potterhead or LEGO aficionado. Each new story in the series began with the train’s whistle and so too does this list. So, ready yourself for a magical LEGO journey, just don’t forget your ticket!

16. LEGO HARRY POTTER THE BURROWS 4840

LEGO 4840 Harry Potter The BurrowsEnter the coolest and most eclectic wizarding or otherwise house known to man: the Weasley’s modge podge, tattering house, The Burrow! This 568-piece set builds the nostalgic home in the Deathly Hallows era, when it’s attacked by Death Eaters. Minifigures of Harry, Ginny, Arthur, and Molly must defend the beloved house from the likes of werewolf Fenrir Greyback and crazed Bellatrix Lestrange. Encircled with flame the characters have nothing to do, but duel! Grab this set to help defend this iconic home from evil forces.

17. LEGO HARRY POTTER HOGWARTS EXPRESS 75955

LEGO 75955 Harry Potter Hogwarts Express TrainLooking for an affordable LEGO Harry Potter Train set? Look no further, you’ve officially made it to platform 9 ¾. The Hogwarts Express is one of the more memorable magically inspired things about the series. Why isn’t this set higher on the list then? Well, it’s simple. This is not actually an electric train set. In other words, it doesn’t move. But if you’re looking for an incredibly detailed, miniature recreation of the famous train station and Hogwarts Express, the LEGO 75955 version absolutely nails it. I’d personally just have a hard time buying a LEGO Hogwarts Express set that doesn’t go around in a circle and make super annoying train noises. If you’d rather shell out a fortune, LEGO has an electric version that you’ll want instead.

18. LEGO HARRY POTTER QUIDDITCH MATCH 75956

LEGO 75956 Harry Potter Quidditch MatchAnyone up for shooting the old quaffle? In another existence, I’m confident that I would have been a world class Quidditch player. What could be more fun than flying around on a broomstick while trying to capture a tiny golden snitch? Quidditch was one of the most rad elements of the entire Harry Potter series, and it’s even spawned a number of embarrassing recreations of the game played by nerd enthusiasts. This LEGO Quidditch Match set from Harry Potter features 500 pieces, including the house towers for each of: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. Does it include a golden snitch minifig? Of course it does. Harry and a few others are included as well. This one won’t break the bank, and while it isn’t massive, this is actually a pretty decent set!

19. LEGO HARRY POTTER HAGRID’S HUT 4738

LEGO 4738 Harry Potter Hagrid's HutLet’s escape from the daily grind at Hogwarts and meet Hagrid and Fang for some tea! This home-away-from (away from the Dursleys) is detailed with a light-up fireplace, pumpkins, chairs, cooking ware and the like. Hagrid’s Hut serves as one of the top-3 places, I’d like to visit in the magical world, just behind the kitchens and library! Set in Sorcerer’s Stone regalia, where the magic began, Harry, Ron, and Hermione trundle down the grounds Hogwarts to meet gamekeeper Hagrid with his pink umbrella wand. As his hut rests at the edge of the Forbidden Forest, it’s only natural some of Hagrid’s more scary friends join in. With the 442-piece set comes a truly creepy looking acramantula, Aragog, with a few of his brew and a newly hatched Norberta!

20. GOBLET OF FIRE GRAVEYARD DUEL 4766

LEGO 4766 Harry Potter Graveyard DuelFeel your heart racing as you grab the Triwizard Cup, only to be taken via portkey to a Death Eater invested graveyard. Grab your wand, it’s time to duel the darkest wizards of all time, Lord Voldemort! This 548-piece set recreates the fated moment rat-turned-servant, Wormtail, returns Tom Riddle to frightening power. Included in the set is the Dark Lord’s father’s gravestone, the rise-from-ashes cauldron, and other graveyard accessories used to block from the killing curse. The duel is on with minifigures of a beleaguered Harry and the newly minted Lord Voldemort, both wielding Fawkes’ phoenix tail wands. Also included are Death Eaters Wormtail and masked Lucius Malfoy.

This rare and discontinued, 153-piece set puts you in the middle of the action of a quidditch match. High in the air, you must defend your house’s honor. Complete with a slew of mini figures: both good guys (the golden trio, Hagrid, and the affectionally-named Beaky) and bad guys (executioner McNair and Minister Fudge with axe and bowler, respectively). A perfect match of heroic mentality, this scene gives a tempered approach to action and endearment..

The cool part is the bus itself with a dangerously swinging chandelier, side opening, and roof removal. So, get eleven sickles and take a wild ride on the Knight Bus!

26. LEGO HARRY POTTER FREEING DOBBY 4736

LEGO 4736 Harry Potter Freeing DobbyIs there anything more heartbreaking than the entire Dobby storyline in Harry Potter? Yes, he does eventually earn his freedom, but this little guy just pulled on my heartstrings throughout all of the books and movies. Since this is a spoiler-free zone, I’ll say no more. The LEGO Freeing Dobby set is only 73 pieces, but does come with minifigs for Harry, Luicis Malfoy, and of course Dobby himself. Is it almost certainly overpriced for a 73 piece set? Of course it is. But it’s a LEGO set featuring Dobby from Harry Potter, what more could you possibly want?

27. HUNGARIAN HORNTAIL TRIWIZARD CHALLENGE 75946

LEGO 75946 Harry Potter Hungarian Horntail Triwizard ChallengeReady to up the danger a bit? Let’s add one of the fiercest dragons in mythology: The Hungarian Horntail! What’s a competitor without his competitors? Also present are minifigures of Huffelpuff’s Cedric Diggory, Durmstrang’s Victor Krum, and Beauxbaton’s Fleur Delacour. Prepare for danger and competition with this hair-raising set!

28. LEGO HARRY POTTER THE RISE OF VOLDEMORT 75965

Set on the Tom Riddle’s, Lord Voldemort’s father’s, gravestone, the two fated wizards send their phoenix-core wands to battle against one another. At 184 pieces, this LEGO set is a bit smaller than others with a similar scene, but it comes at the much lower price of $19.99. Still though, it contains several interesting features, like a Death Eater minifigure, Wormtail, and the Triwizard Cup.

The exciting part of this 430-piece set comes in its movable parts. Both abraxans have posable heads, legs, and wings. The carriage can be remade into a 2-floor living area with all the amenities!

30. LEGO HARRY POTTER DIAGON ALLEY 40289

LEGO 40289 Harry Potter Diagon AlleyDiagon Alley can be dangerous place for a young wizard. This smaller LEGO version of Diagon Alley is pretty small coming at only 374 pieces, but it’s still a pretty fun replica of the alley made famous by the Harry Potter series. It’s certainly nowhere near as fun as the giant Diagon Alley build, but you might actually be able to afford this one. Not going to lie, I was kind of disappointed when I was done putting it together, but I also knew what I was getting when I bought it.

Could’ve come in handy in the real world a few times! Not to mention it doubled as a way to insult Snape! Recreate that sense of independence with this 106-piece LEGO set.
