As summer fast approaches and public health guidelines are still in effect across the country, people are being told to expect face masks to stick around for at least a while longer. The good news is that with vaccines ramping up, face masks hopefully won’t be permanent, but even then, it looks as though they will be here during the hot summer heat. So, how can you rock a face mask this summer while looking cool and staying cool? We’ve got some tips you can use.

Make Sure You’re Picking the Right Kind of Mask

The first tip really isn’t dependent on weather, but you want to be sure you’re picking the right kind of face mask. In the summer, you may be better off with a tightly woven cotton mask. This does a good job of keeping droplets contained, yet it is cotton so it will be lightweight. It’s also washable, allowing you to get rid of any sweat that may have accumulated.

Carry Multiple Masks with You

And speaking of getting sweaty, the moment your mask becomes wet, it is no longer effective and doing its job. While you might have been able to wear the same mask all day during the winter months, suddenly in the summer that is no longer a possibility. This is why it’s good to always carry extra masks with you and a bag you can put used masks in. Make sure to switch your mask as soon as it gets sweaty and wet.

Look for Ways to Take a Mask Break

Taking a mask break will also be beneficial and help to cool you off. That could mean stepping outdoors where you can remove your mask, or making sure you are a safe distance away from others and in an area where you are allowed to take off your mask.

Increase Your Water Intake

Because it’s summer and you’re hot and sweating, you need to be sure you’re staying well hydrated. This usually means increasing your water intake for the day. You can start to carry a refillable insulated water bottle so you always have fresh cold water on hand.

Embrace a Nightly Skincare Routine

Another issue that has popped up in this past year is “maskne”. This is acne caused by wearing a mask. The mask can rub against your skin causing dirt and oils to build up and get trapped. This can be heightened when you’re hot and sweaty. You’ll need to be sure you wash your face well in the morning and night, and preferably after you’ve been sweating a lot. Use a gentle cleanser and follow up with a lightweight oil-free moisturizer.

Add a Touch of Fun to Your Mask Wardrobe

Finally, the best way to rock a mask this summer is to add a touch of fun to your mask rotation with some funny men’s masks. If you have to wear one, why not have fun with it?

Each of these tips will help you to get through the hot summer heat all while wearing a face mask.
