Thanks to the ongoing Star Wars Celebration taking place at Disney, we have our first glimpse of The Last Jedi with a brand new teaser release, which literally just came out.

It’s a lot to digest, but it certainly stirs up some excitement.. as does basically everything in the world of Star Wars release news.

Our Reaction

With a runtime of 2 minutes and 12 seconds, it certainly feels more like a trailer than a teaser. Which makes sense, since Disney’s marketing team for the Star Wars Celebration basically promised us some big drops like this.

But what did we really just watch?

A few scenes of Rey breathing heavily. Kylo Ren’s smoldering helmet, clearly representing his renewed rage after suffering a humiliating defeat (and facial scar) from the epic light-saber duel with Rey. Poe Dameron predictably sprinting down a hall towards presumably an X-Wing, while stuff blows up around him. Finn, immersed in what appears to be some sort of hyperbaric chamber? Okay definitely not a hyperbaric chamber, but what is going on there? Rey sprinting angrily with a light saber. Captain Phasma, leading the Resistance army into battle.

And Luke. Of course.. Luke. Just a few, foreshadowy seconds of Luke, delivering a disheartening message, presumably to Rey:

“I only know one truth.. it’s time for the Jedi.. to end.”

Not cool Luke, not cool at all.

*For the record, some people are saying that it could have been Kylo Ren’s voice we heard.. but just no. First of all, it doesn’t sound like Adam Driver’s voice, it sounds like Mark Hamill’s voice. Hard to tell? Yeah, I agree it’s not clear-cut, but that’s what Disney wants. Watch the teaser again. Luke’s mouth is moving for a split second before it cuts away, and it seems to match the words we’re hearing. I could be wrong, but that’s definitely Luke saying that, right?

Thank you Disney. Now I’ll have something to talk to my family about over Easter weekend.
